Penelope Clayton, unfamiliar with polite society, travels to London to stay with her well-connected cousin, expecting little success in securing a marriage. Despite her lack of social experience, her natural grace and new gowns catch the attention of Lord Alexander Forsyth, while another suitor, Viscount Midhurst, also takes an interest. As her father’s circumstances change, Penelope begins contemplating her independence and the possibility of forging her own path.
