Serious Pleasures

This reissued biography explores the fascinating life of Stephen Tennant, a flamboyant and gender-challenging figure of 1920s London society, known for his artistic and social connections with notable figures like Cecil Beaton, E.M. Forster, and Greta Garbo. Described as a decadent, otherworldly icon, Tennant's life was marked by his creative pursuits, including his ongoing, unfinished illustrated novel, and his role as a muse and confidante to many celebrated personalities. Philip Hoare masterfully recounts Tennant’s extraordinary, artful existence, blending affection with insight into his provocative, era-defining persona.
