In 1973, eight-year-old Wenguang Huang’s grandmother became fixated on her death and insisted on being buried rather than cremated, despite a national ban on traditional burials in Xi'an, China. Over the next 15 years, the family navigated the tensions and risks involved in her wishes, culminating in his father constructing a coffin. This ongoing focus on the burial plans significantly impacted Huang’s upbringing and his family's dynamics.
