Set against the backdrop of 1708 on the border of China and Tibet, this story follows Li Du, a former imperial librarian turned exile, as he navigates a town bustling with travelers and intrigue during a rare solar eclipse. When a Jesuit astronomer is found murdered, Li Du senses that the truth behind the crime is more complex than it appears, with many secrets lurking beneath the town's vibrant surface.
