Life and Adventures of Jack Engle

In 1852, Walt Whitman was working on two projects: his iconic collection of poetry, Leaves of Grass, and a novel titled Life and Adventures of Jack Engle, which was published under a pseudonym and largely forgotten until rediscovered in 2016. This lively story of orphanhood, greed, and adventure in New York City was almost lost to history, with only one surviving copy hidden away in the Library of Congress for over a century. Now reprinted by the University of Iowa Press, the novel is restored as a significant, previously unknown piece of American literature by one of its greatest authors.
