Walt Whitman (1819–1892) was an American poet, essayist, journalist, editor, and printer best known for Leaves of Grass, a collection he first published in 1855 and continually revised throughout his life. He developed an innovative free-verse style celebrating democracy, nature, the body, love, and American identity, and his Civil War experiences inspired poems collected in Drum-Taps. Whitman is widely regarded as one of the most influential American poets and a pioneer of modern free verse.
