The Longest Road

In September 1996, Philip Caputo found inspiration on Barter Island, prompting a vision to travel from the southernmost to the northernmost points of the contiguous United States. Fourteen years later, amidst a deeply divided America, he embarked on a four-month journey in 2011, accompanied by his wife and their two English setters. Covering 17,000 miles, Caputo interviewed over 80 Americans from diverse backgrounds, seeking to uncover the essence of the nation and what binds it together in the 21st century.
