William Duncan accepts an offer from his uncle, Lord Beddington, to learn estate management while supporting their local hospital. Amid a series of mishaps involving his uncle and his wife, William navigates familial pressures and romantic entanglements, as his aunt's rival attempts to trap him into marriage with her daughter, Lavinia, despite his feelings for Kate, the daughter of a left-wing councillor. With the assistance of Algy Frobisher, the General’s aide, William faces a number of dramatic challenges, including financial troubles, dramatic rescues, and the quest for an elusive treasure that could change his fortunes and help him win back his love.
