The Trees of Pride

In this gripping tale, three trees, dubbed the Peacock trees, are implicated in a deadly fever that has plagued local peasants. Squire Vane dismisses these accusations as mere superstition and wagers that he can spend the night among the trees. However, come dawn, he has mysteriously disappeared, leaving questions of his fate and potential foul play from various suspects—be it the poet, the lawyer, the woodsman, or even the trees themselves.
