In a picturesque Mississippi spring, the library staff is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of new director Oscar Reilly, whose cost-cutting measures target cherished archives and rare books. Reilly's abrasive demeanor alienates staff, especially as he threatens the job of Charlie's friend Melba and enforces a ban on pets in the library. Tensions escalate when Reilly is found dead, and suspicion falls on Melba after a threatening email surfaces. Determined to prove her innocence, Charlie partners with his dog Diesel to uncover the truth and clear his friend's name.
