Canary in the Coal Mine

In this heartfelt tale, Bitty, a brave little canary, navigates the treacherous life of a miner bird in a West Virginia coal mine during the Depression. Determined to change the dangerous conditions for his fellow miners and canaries, he embarks on a courageous journey, hopping a coal train to the state capital in search of hope and help. Madelyn Rosenberg’s engaging story resonates with themes of bravery and resilience, reminiscent of classic children's literature.
