Prater Violet

In this engaging narrative, Christopher Isherwood explores the creation of the fictional melodrama Prater Violet, set against the rich backdrop of 19th-century Vienna. As Hitler's annexation looms over the real Vienna in the 1930s, the story presents an ironic juxtaposition of the theatrical world and the approaching tragedy. The novel features vibrant characters, including the authoritative and passionate director Friedrich Bergmann and his amiable protégé, a young screenwriter, who embodies a fictionalized version of Isherwood himself.
