Richard Bernard Heldmann, born on October 12, 1857, in St Johns Wood, North London, began his literary career in his early 20s with contributions to various magazines. After a brief tenure as co-editor of Union Jack and a scandal involving forged cheques that led to an 18-month prison sentence, he adopted the pseudonym Richard Marsh to rebuild his reputation. His novel The Beetle, published in 1897, became his most significant success, showcasing his prolific output of nearly 80 works across diverse genres. Marsh passed away from heart disease on August 9, 1915, at the age of 57, leaving behind a legacy as one of Britain's notable writers.
