The Vampyre

John William Polidori, born in London in 1795, was a physician and writer known for his connection to notable literary figures like Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. After studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, he became Byron's personal physician and participated in a famous ghost story challenge at Villa Diodati, which led to his creation of 'The Vampyre'—the first modern vampire story in English. Despite early literary success, including other poems and plays, Polidori faced struggles with gambling debts and depression, culminating in his untimely death at 25, which is widely believed to have been a suicide.
