John William Polidori (1795–1821) was an English writer and physician who served as Lord Byron’s personal doctor in 1816. During their time at Lake Geneva, Polidori wrote The Vampyre, published in 1819 and initially misattributed to Byron; the story became a foundational work of modern vampire fiction. He also wrote poetry, drama, essays, a diary, and the novel Ernestus Berchtold; or, The Modern Oedipus, though The Vampyre remained his most influential literary work.
