In the bustling trade hub of Bingtown, the liveship Vivacia, crafted from wizardwood and possessing sentience, represents the legacy of the Vestrit family, which Althea Vestrit desperately seeks to reclaim. Meanwhile, her nephew Wintrow, pulled from his studies and forced to serve aboard the vessel, views it as a burdensome fate. Complicating matters, the ambitious pirate Kennit plots to capture a liveship of his own as part of his larger scheme for power over the Pirate Isles, entwining the destinies of Althea, Wintrow, and Vivacia.
