V.I. Warshawski is drawn into a search for August, a young filmmaker who has disappeared with the company of Emerald, an older black actress eager to share her life story. Her investigation takes her from a military base to the farm where Emerald grew up, uncovering secrets from both the past and present. As she delves deeper, V.I. encounters numerous unexpected complications, ultimately leading to a dangerous and deadly situation.
