Thomas Cahill was an American popular historian and bestselling author whose accessible, literary histories explored formative moments in Western civilization. His six-volume Hinges of History series included How the Irish Saved Civilization, The Gifts of the Jews, Desire of the Everlasting Hills, Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea, Mysteries of the Middle Ages, and Heretics and Heroes. Before writing full time, he taught at several universities, worked as a journalist and book-review contributor, and served as director of religious publishing at Doubleday. He died in 2022.
