Seamus Heaney (1939–2013) was an Irish poet, translator, teacher, and critic whose writing career began in the 1960s with the publication of his first poetry collections. His work drew on rural Irish life, history, mythology, language, and the political experience of Northern Ireland; he also produced acclaimed translations, including Beowulf. He received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature for works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth.
