Chip Hughes earned a Ph.D. in English from Indiana University in 1981 and taught American literature, film, writing, and popular fiction at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa for nearly three decades. He has published nonfiction books and essays on John Steinbeck and launched the Surfing Detective mystery series in 2004 with Murder on Molokaʻi. The series, featuring Honolulu-based surfer and private investigator Kai Cooke, is now published by Slate Ridge Press.
