Mary Gibson was born and brought up in Bermondsey, southeast London, the setting for all her novels, and now lives in Kent. After a 30-year career in publishing, she took early retirement in 2009 to write her debut novel, Custard Tarts and Broken Hearts, which became a Kindle bestseller and was selected for World Book Night 2015. She has since written a series of Bermondsey-set historical novels, including Jam and Roses, Gunner Girls and Fighter Boys, Hattie's Home, A Sister's Struggle and The Bermondsey Bookshop.
