Arthur W. Upfield (1890–1964) was an English-Australian novelist who moved to Australia in 1911 and drew on his extensive experience of the outback for his writing. He began publishing crime fiction in the late 1920s, creating Detective Inspector Napoleon “Bony” Bonaparte, the central character in 29 novels. Upfield became a major international crime writer and wrote more than 35 books, many combining meticulously plotted mysteries with richly detailed Australian settings.
