Samuel Shem is the pen name of psychiatrist and physician Stephen J. Bergman, MD. He began his fiction career with The House of God (1978), a landmark satirical medical novel based on his experiences as a hospital intern, and later wrote Mount Misery, Fine, The Spirit of the Place, Man's 4th Best Hospital, and Our Hospital. He is also a playwright, essayist, and activist, and has collaborated with Janet Surrey on books and the award-winning play Bill W. and Dr. Bob.
