Richard Peck (1934–2018) was an American novelist best known for writing acclaimed books for children and young adults. After teaching junior high English, he became a full-time writer in 1971 and published more than 35 novels, including the Newbery Medal-winning A Year Down Yonder and the Newbery Honor book A Long Way from Chicago. His work also earned the Scott O’Dell Award, an Edgar Allan Poe Award, National Book Award finalist recognition, and a National Humanities Medal.
