William Brinkley (1917–1993) was an American novelist and journalist who served as a U.S. Navy officer during World War II, reported for The Washington Post, and wrote for Life magazine. He published his first novel, Quicksand, in 1948, followed by the bestselling military comedy Don't Go Near the Water, which was adapted into a 1957 film. His final novel, The Last Ship (1988), was a post-apocalyptic naval fiction classic later adapted into a television series.
