Harriet A. Washington is an award-winning American science writer, journalist, editor, and medical ethicist. She has written extensively about medicine, public health, race, environmental injustice, and medical ethics, including Medical Apartheid, A Terrible Thing to Waste, Infectious Madness, and Carte Blanche. Her writing has appeared in major publications and scholarly journals, and Medical Apartheid won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction and other honors.
