Lauran Bosworth Paine (1916–2001), born Lawrence Kerfman Duby Jr., was an American author who began writing in 1934 and became a full-time professional writer by 1948. He published more than 1,000 books—most of them Westerns—under his own name and dozens of pseudonyms, drawing on his experience as a cowboy, rodeo competitor, rancher, and Hollywood stunt rider. He also wrote romance, science fiction, mystery, and nonfiction, and his Western novels Law Man and The Open Range Men were adapted into films.
