Nell Irvin Painter is an American historian, writer, and artist who served as the Edwards Professor of American History Emerita at Princeton University. Her nonfiction examines U.S. history, race, Black identity, and social change, including Standing at Armageddon, Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol, The History of White People, and Creating Black Americans. Her later writing includes the memoir Old in Art School and the essay collection I Just Keep Talking.
