Eric Foner is an American historian and prolific nonfiction author whose writing focuses on the Civil War, Reconstruction, slavery, emancipation, race relations, political history, and the history of freedom in the United States. A longtime Columbia University professor, he has written influential works including Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, The Fiery Trial, Gateway to Freedom, and The Second Founding. His scholarship and narrative histories have received major honors, including the Pulitzer Prize, Bancroft Prize, and Lincoln Prize.
