Elaine Pagels is an American historian of religion and author whose writing focuses on early Christianity, Gnosticism, biblical texts, and the historical development of religious belief. Her breakthrough book, The Gnostic Gospels, won the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and she has since written bestselling works including Beyond Belief, Revelations, Why Religion?, and Miracles and Wonder. She is Professor of Religion Emeritus at Princeton University.
