Henry Valentine Miller (1891–1980) was an American novelist, essayist, short-story writer, and memoirist. After devoting himself to writing in the 1920s, he lived in Paris, where he published Tropic of Cancer (1934), followed by Black Spring and Tropic of Capricorn. His semi-autobiographical, experimental fiction blended social criticism, philosophical reflection, stream of consciousness, surrealism, and candid depictions of sex; he also wrote travel books, literary criticism, and autobiographical works.
