He began at The Washington Post as a sportswriter, later became a national enterprise writer, and won Pulitzer Prizes for explanatory reporting and feature writing. He is the author of Ten Letters, American Hunger, Rising Out of Hatred, and Voices from the Pandemic, and is a writer-at-large for The New York Times.
