James M. Cain (1892–1977) was an American novelist, journalist, and screenwriter whose writing career began in newspaper journalism before he turned to fiction. His first major novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934), established his reputation for fast-paced, sexually charged stories of crime, greed, and desperation. He followed it with influential works including Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce, and Serenade, many of which were adapted into major films and helped define American film noir.
