John D. MacDonald (1916–1986) was an American novelist and short-story writer who began by publishing extensively in pulp magazines after World War II. He went on to write more than 70 novels, becoming best known for hard-boiled mystery and crime fiction, including the 21-book Travis McGee series and The Executioners, later adapted as Cape Fear. His Florida-set fiction often explored corruption, environmental damage, and social change.
