Chester Himes (1909–1984) began writing while imprisoned in Ohio State Penitentiary, publishing an account of a 1930 prison fire in Esquire. His first novel, If He Hollers Let Him Go (1945), addressed racism and the psychological effects of life in a white-dominated society. After moving to Europe in 1953, he became best known for his Harlem detective novels featuring Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, including A Rage in Harlem and Cotton Comes to Harlem.
