Alice McDermott is an American novelist and essayist whose writing career began with her 1982 debut, A Bigamist’s Daughter. She has written nine novels and an essay collection, often exploring Irish-American Catholic families, faith, memory, and loss. Her novel Charming Billy won the 1998 National Book Award for Fiction, and several other novels were Pulitzer Prize finalists; she has also taught writing and literature at Johns Hopkins University.
