Howard Fast (1914–2003) was a prolific American author who published his first novel at eighteen and built his reputation with socially engaged historical novels such as Citizen Tom Paine, Freedom Road, The American, and Spartacus. He also wrote contemporary fiction, biographies, popular histories, plays, screenplays, children’s books, science fiction, and detective thrillers, including mystery novels published under the pseudonym E. V. Cunningham. His later bestselling Lavette family saga began with The Immigrants, while works such as The Naked God and Being Red reflected his political commitments and changing views.
