Frances Mayes is an American poet, essayist, memoirist, travel writer, and novelist. She first published poetry in the 1970s and later taught creative writing at San Francisco State University. Her bestselling memoir Under the Tuscan Sun and its Tuscany-centered books brought her international recognition; she has also written novels including Swan, Women in Sunlight, and A Great Marriage, as well as travel books, essays, and works on poetry.
