Pierre Boulle (1912–1994) was a French novelist and screenwriter who began his literary career after working as an engineer and serving with the Free French in Southeast Asia during World War II. His wartime experiences inspired The Bridge over the River Kwai (1952), while Planet of the Apes (1963) established him as a major science-fiction writer. He published novels, short stories, memoirs, and screenplays, and both of his best-known novels became internationally successful films.
