Craig Alanson began writing fiction while working on financial reports for a large IT services company. He independently published three novels, and within six months of releasing his first ebook, he left his day job to write full time. His breakthrough came with Columbus Day, the first Expeditionary Force novel, whose audiobook success helped launch a bestselling science-fiction series; he has since written the Expeditionary Force and Mavericks series, the fantasy Ascendant trilogy, the young-adult space opera Aces, and the urban-fantasy Convergence series.
