Dick King-Smith (1922–2011) was an English children's author best known for humorous, warmly observed stories about animals. After working as a farmer and primary-school teacher, he began writing children's fiction in 1976; his first book, The Fox Busters, was published in 1978. He wrote around 130 books, including The Sheep-Pig, which was adapted into the film Babe, and became known as a master of animal-centered fiction.
