Heinrich Harrer (1912–2006) was an Austrian mountaineer, explorer, photographer, and author whose writing drew on his expeditions and years abroad. He became internationally famous for Seven Years in Tibet, a memoir about his escape from British internment in India, journey across the Himalayas, and life in Lhasa, where he became a tutor and confidant of the young Dalai Lama. Harrer wrote 23 books, including The White Spider and Lost Lhasa, primarily documenting mountaineering, exploration, travel, and cultural encounters.
