James A. McLaughlin is an American novelist and essayist who grew up in Virginia and lives in Utah. His debut novel, Bearskin, was published in 2018 and won the 2019 Edgar Award for Best First Novel; it was followed by Panther Gap in 2023. His fiction and essays have appeared in literary journals including The Missouri Review, River Teeth, and Camas.
