Paula Fox (1923–2017) was an American author whose career encompassed acclaimed novels for adults, children’s and young adult fiction, and memoir. She published her first novel, Poor George, in 1967 and became especially renowned for The Slave Dancer, which won the 1974 Newbery Medal, and for her psychologically nuanced literary fiction. Her later recognition included the Hans Christian Andersen Award, a National Book Award, and induction into the New York State Writers Hall of Fame.
