He began publishing magazine articles and historical fiction before turning to fantasy and science fiction in the 1980s. He is best known for numerous Dragonlance novels, several co-written with Tonya C. Cook, including books that reached the New York Times bestseller list; he has also written nonfiction and teleplays.
