Vance is an American author whose writing career began with essays and commentary before the publication of his bestselling 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. The book combines personal narrative with social analysis of working-class life, Appalachia, and the Rust Belt, and was later adapted into a feature film. His later book, Communion, explores his return to Christian faith and conversion to Catholicism.
