Philip Gabriel is an American translator and Japanologist who has translated Japanese literature into English for more than three decades. A professor emeritus of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona, he is best known for translating works by Haruki Murakami, including 1Q84, Kafka on the Shore, and First Person Singular, as well as books by Kenzaburō Ōe, Senji Kuroi, Riku Onda, and other Japanese authors. His translation of Kafka on the Shore won the 2006 PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize.
