Joy Harjo is a Muscogee Nation poet, performer, and writer whose career spans poetry collections, memoirs, plays, children’s books, and nonfiction. Her first poetry chapbook, The Last Song, was published in 1975, and she became the first Native American to serve as U.S. Poet Laureate, holding the position from 2019 to 2022. Her writing often draws on Indigenous history, spirituality, music, ancestry, and personal experience.
