Nikki Giovanni (1943–2024) was an American poet, writer, editor, educator, and leading voice of the Black Arts Movement. She published more than two dozen volumes of poetry, essays, and edited anthologies, along with numerous illustrated children’s books, including Rosa and Lincoln and Douglass. Her writing explored race, gender, sexuality, family, love, grief, and Black identity, and she was also known for her spoken-word recordings and public readings.
