Abraham Verghese is an Ethiopian-born Indian-American physician and writer whose literary career grew from his experiences caring for patients with AIDS and addiction. He earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and has written the memoirs My Own Country and The Tennis Partner, followed by the bestselling novels Cutting for Stone and The Covenant of Water. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, Granta, and other major publications.
